Bonnyrigg Rose made the journey to Meadowbank to face off against Edinburgh City, newly relegated from Scottish League 1. Manager, Calum Elliot made one change from last week’s defeat at Spartans, with Ben Scarborough starting on the Rose wing, replacing Dean Watson.
Cameron Ross posed Rose’s first threat of the afternoon as his shot went just left of Mark Weir’s goal after a nice passage of play between him and Barrett. Ross came close once again in the 14th minute after his header was claimed by the Edinburgh City goalkeeper.
Bonnyrigg took the lead through Kerr Young in the 18th minute when he headed in from a Lee Currie in-swinging corner. Currie curled home a shot from a distance in the 29th minute, drawing an excellent save from Weir.
Rose controlled the first 30 minutes of the game, holding great spells of possession. Edinburgh City created chances late in the first half, with Innis Lawson hitting Ritchie’s crossbar after firing a shot from outside the box. Edinburgh City was given a lifeline just before the half-time whistle through James Stoke, after a dragged-back cross from Jon Robertson.
The second half had a completely different tempo, with Edinburgh City building momentum early on. Sean Murphy was given his marching orders in the 49th minute after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Rose with 10 men for the majority of the second half. Connor Young gave Edinburgh City the lead in the 65th minute after receiving a pass from Innes Lawson and firing past Ritchie.
Bonnyrigg Rose responded with a Neil Martyniuk volley to level the game in the 78th minute. Rose had chances to win the game through Cameron Ross and Dean Watson—Watson's shot was saved by Weir, and Ross missed the target. In the closing minutes, both goalkeepers made crucial saves—Tom Ritchie denied a Kieran Somerville deflection, while Mark Weir, formerly of Bonnyrigg Rose, saved a header from Martyniuk—resulting in a draw and both sides earning a point.
The Rose faithful will draw positives from this result, showing clear resilience and fighting spirit late in the game. Bonnyrigg Rose faces Clyde next Saturday at New Dundas Park, as they look to build from this result in the 2024/25 William Hill Scottish League 2 season.
