Bonnyrigg Rose began their early season preparations at Shielfield Stadium, home of Lowland League side Berwick Rangers. Calum Elliot named 4 of Rose's six new summer signings in the starting eleven, with the new men eager to impress the gaffer ahead of the upcoming Premier Sports Cup Group Stage.
Berwick started on the front foot, with a familiar face to Rose supporters in Liam Buchanan having the first chance of the game, his header missing the mark.
Bonnyrigg Rose missed a header from a similar position a few moments later as Brad Rodden went close, but Rose began to take control of the game after an open first few minutes.
Owen Wardell was proving a threat down the left, constantly getting the better of his marker, and he was the next to go close for Rose as his near-post shot was well saved by the keeper.
Rose would find the net shortly after the half-hour mark, as Aaron Arnott, donning a Rose jersey once again, ghosted into the opposition box and placed it past Calum Antell to give Rose the lead.
That lead would be expanded upon a matter of minutes later, as Arnott played a neat pass beyond the defence for Kallum Higginbotham and Dean Watson. Higginbotham was clattered by the singular Berwick defender, but Watson was there to smash it in off the post.
Paddy Martin pulled off a smart save to deny the home side a route back into the game before the break, meaning Rose took a comfortable lead into half-time.
'Comfortable' also sums up Rose's second-half display, controlling a lot of the ball despite making 8 changes to the team just after the hour mark.
Smart Osadolor did well to find Ben Scarborough in the box, but the new signing couldn't find the net after doing well to shift onto his left foot.
Scarborough would grab his goal at the second-time of asking and it was a lot easier than his earlier chance thanks to some great play from Bradley Barrett and Wardell down the left, with the latter finding Scarborough at the back post who prodded into an empty net.
Wardell would continue to cause problems down the left in the remaining stages of the game, testing substitute keeper Thomas Kay late in the game.
Calum Elliot will be happy with his team's performance, and will be hoping his side can continue to improve heading into the competitive season when they face Civil Service Strollers in more pre-season action at Christie Gillies Park on Tuesday evening.
