Match Preview

Seán McGill8 Aug 2022 - 20:50

Bonnyrigg Rose will take a short break from their unbeaten start to life in cinch League Two as they take on Livingston B in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy on Tuesday evening at New Dundas Park.

The winners will face a trip to either Albion Rovers or Celtic B in the next round in previously named Challenge Cup.

Robbie Horn’s men are no strangers to coming up against Colts sides, battling the aforementioned Celtic and city rivals Rangers twice each in their title winning Lowland League campaign last season.

Rose emerged with a 3-1 winning record across the four contests, with a 5-2 loss to Rangers marking their only home league defeat since September 2019.

The current cinch League Two leaders head into the tie in a buoyant mood, after a Neil Martyniuk penalty, a Dean Brett curler, and a returning Kevin Smith clincher ensured Rose’s 100% SPFL start prevailed.

Tuesday’s encounter may provide the opportunity for Rose to exorcise some demons from last season’s SPFL Trust Trophy, after they were cruelly edged out on penalties by Queen’s Park at Firhill.

A stellar performance against full-time opposition, the visitors took the lead on the night through a Dean Hoskins goal, a frighteningly familiar sight at the time. After being denied what looked a stonewall penalty, the Spiders soon converted one of their own, which was a sign of things to come in the shootout.

Nevertheless, an impressive display against a side who would end the season revelling in the euphoria of promotion to the cinch Championship.

The Livi youngsters will come into the game hoping to prove that their capable of the step up to the first team, who defeated Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday in the top-flight.

A player who will know the emotions of those young Lions is Ross Gray, who spent his formative years in the youth set up in West Lothian. Now proving a star man in cinch League Two, the diminutive dynamo may look to have some tricks up his sleeve should he feature.

Kick-off is 7:45pm at New Dundas Park on Tuesday evening, with tickets priced at £10 for adults (17-65-year-olds) and £5 for concessions (Under 17s, Over 65s, Disabled & Carers)

Season tickets are not valid and tickets can be purchased at the gate via cash or card (Card payments can only be accepted at the middle gate, opposite the social club).
